Orlando, FL – August 19, 2015 –

The Food Shows and Ferdinand Metz Foodservice Forum are excited to present the inaugural Torch Award to Chef Norman Van Aken for his outstanding achievements and contributions to the restaurant and foodservice community. Chef Norman, chef-owner of NORMAN’S at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, in Orlando and the founding father of New World Cuisine, is the only Floridian on the James Beard list of Who’s Who in American Food and Beverage, as well as an internationally acclaimed author.

“I am very excited to receive this newly created award, and hope that in doing so more light will be shed upon how diverse, deep and delicious the cooking of Florida is,” said Chef Norman Van Aken.  “I have lived and cooked here my whole adult life and it continues to inspire me every single day!

“To receive the Torch Award from the man who had so much to do with culinary education in our country, (Chef Ferdinand Metz) adds such an extraordinary dimension to the award itself!  Chef Metz has dedicated his life to cuisine and to the understanding of it. I am honored to join him on the stage.”

The awards ceremony will take place Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at 1:00 pm, during the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Show at the Orange County Convention Center.  After the awards ceremony, Chef Norman will join Ferdinand Metz, Certified Master Chef, for a one-on-one cooking demonstration.  The demonstration will take place on the Culinary Demonstration Theater stage and is open to all trade show attendees.

Chef Norman Van Aken’s Radio Show “A Word on Food” Saturdays on WLRN

Miami, FL – August 13, 2015 –

Norman Van Aken has been described as ‘legendary, visionary and a trailblazer’. He is known as “the founding father of New World Cuisine,” a celebration of Latin, Caribbean, Asian, African and American flavors. He is also known internationally for introducing the concept of “Fusion” to the culinary world.

His new book is a memoir. It is titled, “No Experience Necessary,” (Taylor Trade Publishing). The book has been praised by the likes of Thomas Keller, Mario Batali, Emeril Lagasse, Monique Truong, Alan Richman (GQ Magazine), Jeremiah Tower, Wolfgang Puck and the late, great Charlie Trotter.

He is the only Floridian inducted into the prestigious James Beard list of “Who’s Who in American Food and Beverage.” His restaurant “NORMAN’S was nominated as a finalist for the James Beard Foundation’s “Best Restaurant in America”. He has been a James Beard Foundation semi-finalist for “Best Chef in America”.

In 2006, he was honored as one of the “Founders of the New American Cuisine,” alongside Alice Waters, Paul Prudhomme, and Mark Miller at Spain’s International Summit of Gastronomy ‘Madrid Fusión’ event.

Norman Van Aken has published five cookbooks: Feast of Sunlight 1988, The Exotic Fruit Book 1995, Norman’s New World Cuisine 1997, New World Kitchen 2003 and My Key West Kitchen 2012, (with Justin Van Aken).

About Ferdinand Metz:
Ferdinand Metz is a Certified Master Chef and President Emeritus of the Culinary Institute of America. He is also the past President of the World Association of Chefs Societies and the past Chairman of the NRAEF. Chef Metz was selected to lead the Forum because of his breadth and depth of experience, which includes his influence on the American foodservice industry, and for his achievements in the culinary industry, having received the Lifetime Achievement Awards from the James Beard Foundation, the American Academy of Chefs, The World Association of Chefs and the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF). As the former Manager of the Culinary Team USA, Chef Metz led the team to three consecutive world championships and one World Cup, and was author of four editions of The Culinary Olympics Cookbook. His foodservice experiences include two apprenticeships in culinary arts and baking and pastry arts, 15 years as Senior R & D Manager of Heinz, as well as positions as Banquet Chef at New York’s prestigious Plaza Hotel and Tournament at the renowned Le Pavilion restaurant in New York City.
